What Is Spravato®?

Spravato®, chemically known as esketamine, is a nasal spray approved by the FDA for use in conjunction with an oral antidepressant for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It is related to the drug ketamine, an anesthetic that has been used off-label for years as an antidepressant at lower doses.

How Does Spravato® Work?

While the exact mechanisms aren't entirely clear, it's believed that Spravato® affects the brain's neurotransmitters, particularly glutamate, to help restore synaptic connections in brain cells and improve mood more rapidly than traditional antidepressants.
